Cyber cases increasing drastically; Bihar to strengthen its cyber security

When compared to other states, Bihar is found to be having a dramatic increase in cyber-crimes according to the reports. The police records speaks about a large group of people that were infected and tricked by the fraudsters and resulted in losing their hard earned money.

Cyber criminals in these days are organized and use advanced tactics to attack the target. Some cyber-crimes are performed as an act of revenge against a particular person. Some does cyber-crimes to seek vengeance which can be personal or even political.

The issue of cyber-crime were taken to discussion in the assembly meeting by the Home Minister Sharavan kumar when the opposing party raised a question about the issue.

After a constant debate and discussion on this topic, the minister assured that a special investigation team of Bihar police will be working on the issue to bring peace in the state.

While checking the records, it was found that around 309 cyber-crimes were registered in 2016, 433 in 2017, 474 in 2018 and 1050 in 2019 in Bihar. From this it is visible that the number of cyber-attacks is increasing year by year. This should end.

The development in technology has brought a major change in everybody’s life. The extensive use of internet has taken over every field. Everything is online today- shopping, banking, education etc. Internet is a viable platform.

As the discussion progressed in the assembly, they began to analyse the after effects of these attacks. They were certain about one thing that if this is left unchecked, these educated criminals will infect the entire security system of the state in the future. If their target today is common people, there is a greater probability that tomorrow it will turn against the security forces.

Considering the Eastern part of India, Bihar ranks the 10th position after which comes Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. This data was released based on the recent statistics report by the cyber cell.

While focussing more on Bihar, states including Kishanganj, Viashali, Purnia, Patna, Siwan, Gopalganj, Kaimur, Navada, Jamui, Muzaffarpur and Gaya are the most cyber hacked states. Cases of cyber frauds are flooding from these states of Bihar. While analysing, half of the states of Bihar are in danger.

The method they introduce and the way these criminals enact them makes people to fall for their trap. These hackers have an immense talent to deceive people and make them believe in their fake stories.

Example of some cases

Recently from the district of Nawada, five cyber criminals were taken into custody for involving in money fraudster activity and tricked a DRDO scientist of Rs.14 lakh by making him believe that he was about to get a car since he has won an online lottery.

Another incident occurred in the Vaishali district where a teenager used a fake scheme about the Prime Minister’s cash relief fund and assuring people that they would receive Rs.15000 if they fill out the online form.

There was also an incident that was reported was deceiving 40 lakhs through fake policies from a NALCO officer.

While tracking the pattern and location of the attacks in Bihar, majority of the attacks were based on rural areas and the main victims were women. Women in the rural areas are more vulnerable to attacks and can be easily tricked. This is mainly due to the illiteracy rate in these provisions. Studies say that they are often tricked in the name of ATM verification.

As a final verdict of the meeting, ADG of Economic Offense Unit (EOU), NH Khan was given the task to enforce 74 cyber units that spreads through the entire district of Bihar to defend cyber activities and to spread awareness among the common people and to train them to identify a cyber-attack and how to prevent them from happening.
